Walter Murch - 'In the Blink of an Eye'
The Rule of 6 :
- 3D continuity. Using two cuts from different angles to show one movement e.g a man walking across a room. This was an early rule used in sound film. This still needs a perfect cut as it may look as though the subject has moved position on screen.
The 6 rules for an ideal cut
1.) Emotion (51%) - how the viewer felt whilst watching the film.
2.) Story (23%) - always advances the narrative.
3.) Rhythm (10%) - it occurs at the 'right' moment.
4.) 'Eye Trace' (7%) - what the audience is focusing on within the frame.
5.) 2D plane of screen (5%)
6.) 3D space of action (4%) (Continuity).
EMOTION is the most important aspect of editing!!!
Sacrifice from the bottom of the list upwards if needed. NEVER sacrifice emotion.
